Out of the Box Competition

The brief of the design challenge was to up-cycle Sasung's tv packaging into an item suitable for home use.

My design allows home-owners or office workers to build their own multi-purpose smart recycling bin that can also be used as a free-standing storage unit (perfect for toys, home items etc.)

Recycling can be very confusing as often the set of regulations on how waste is collected and managed is not fixed at the national level and instructions on packaging can be vague or misleading. Not sorting waste properly leads to increased contamination and less waste being recycled which increases plastic pollution and landfill waste. The hope for this product is to encourage a more mindful approach to waste disposal and facilitate a circular model.

The user can construct the bin and then download the optional app. The app will allow the user to scan a packaging item and will indicate which compartment to place it in based on their local regulations. If the user wishes not to use the app, they can customise the compartments. The idea is to create a cloud-based database that associates the product’s UPC barcode to the compartment the item should be placed in.

The main body of the carton is folded into five equal sections, two sheets are slotted on either side and one as a base, forming 4 compartments. This tessellated triangular shape gives it structural stability and durability.

The grooves at the top are there to hook bin bag liners or plastic shopping bags.

The aim of this design is also to maximise the amount of cardboard packaging used and minimise offcuts. It uses no glue or tape so it can be 100% recycled at the end of its use. It utilises 50 % of the TV packaging.

This is a great design for people at home and businesses looking to become more environmental and reduce their plastic footprint.
